General Information

Düsseldorf with its 585,000 inhabitants is both the Capital and the center of North Rhine-Westphalia, the most highly populated state of the Federal Republic of Germany,- and a modern metropolis with a history of more than 700 years.  Situated in the heart of Europe, one of seven inhabitants of Europe live within a 200 km radius of Düsseldorf. Düsseldorf has a lot to offer to its visitors: Art, culture, modern architecture, business and Rhenish lifestyle.  You will sind that this lively city situated on the River Rhine is very friendly - a harmonious blend of past, present and future.

International Place of Business and Learning

Düsseldorf is the address of some 5,000 enterprises from more than 50 countries. It also harbours Germany's second largest banking centre and the largest Japanese community in Europe. It is well known for its fashion, banking and trade fair business.  It is the site of the most closely knit university and research establishments in Europe - in total 54 universities and academies with half a million students living here - the most compact educational scene in Europe.

Joie de vivre, Art and Culture

Art and culture rank very high in Düsseldorf; it is one of the three centers of fine arts in Germany.  Famous poets and artists lived and worked here bringing an international reputation to the city - as for example Heinrich Heine, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter and Jörg Immendorff. The numerous museums and galleries, the many varied parks and gardens are an invitation  to experience art to the fullest.

Enjoy performances in the Opera or concerts in the dome-shoped concert hall "Tonhalle", poetry reading, theatrical performances or just stroll through the Old Town - called the "longest bar in the world" - with its 260 pubs, bars, restaurants or visit one of the famous house breweries - "Dä Uerige" (Berger Str. 1), "Im Füchschen"  (Ratinger Str. 28) or "Im Goldenen Kessel" (Bolker Str. 44) serving their own home brewed beer.

The Düsseldorf media port area is the creative mile harbouring art, radio and TV channels, advertisers, fashion and design companies behind refurbished traditional and ultra modern facades at the old Rhine harbour. What was a landscape of monumental warehouse buildings has been transformed by internationally renowned architects such as Steven Holl, David Chipperfield and Frank O. Ghery into a jewel in the town's planners crown. Just surf and you will be pleasantly surprised to "strand" in permanent exhibitions of design and advertising agencies, scene bars, or first class speciality restaurants.

In 1995, Düsseldorf opened one of the most beautiful riverside promenades - a 2 km designer walk connecting the Old Town and the media port area  which invites one to rollerblade or enjoy the Rhine panorama from one of the numerous cafés and beer gardens in summer.

Düsseldorf is also a brandname for fashion and beautiful things. It is Germany's fashion metropolis number one where shopping is a pleasure. Due to many designers working and living here and the leading fashion fairs which are held here, hardly any other European city offers as many elegant shops on a single boulevard as the Königsallee, the Kö, where window-shopping is a feast for the eyes.

Hotel accommodation

Düsseldorf offers accommodation in more than 190 hotels of all categories with over 18,000 beds ranking from the well-known international hotel chains and famous local first-class hotels to low-budget accommodation and youth hostels. In addition 3,500 beds in private accommodation are available.

Düsseldorf Travel and Convention Service offers hotel booking at special rates for attendees of ICP 2009 and gives booking information for your rail and air ticket.

Weather conditions

Düsseldorf has a typically coastal climate largely influenced by its nearness to the Atlantic Ocean. In June the temperatures in Düsseldorf are moderate (average high 23°C / 73°F, average low 12°C / 53°F), but there is always a chance of a heat wave. Raining probability 30-60%.
